A man seen staggering across the street before collapsing into a driveway in an apartment complex was fatally shot several times in the torso, police say.
Law enforcement received a call just after midnight on July 13 after a witness saw the struggling victim. Officers and fire department personnel responded and provided first aid, but the 25-year-old male was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident occurred on the 7500 block of High Street in La Mesa. Police say it does not appear that the male was shot on the street, and that there were no calls reporting gunshots in the area. A light-colored sedan was seen driving westbound on High Street shortly before the victim was seen making his way across the street, but it is unknown if the vehicle is linked to the homicide, police say.
Vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the 7500 block of High Street, between Waite Drive and the Park and Ride at 7600 High Street, was closed for several hours.
Police are not releasing the identity of the victim, pending notification of next of kin. Anyone in the area at the time of the incident or who has information on the case is asked to call the La Mesa Police Department at (619) 667-1400. Witnesses can also call Crime Stoppers’ anonymous toll-free tip line (888) 580-TIPS or visit the organization’s website. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest in this case.
