A twelve-year-old boy was killed and two others were injured after being struck by a car Monday morning.
The three children were walking to nearby Pershing Middle School. The three children were transported to Rady Children’s Hospital, according to the San Diego Police Department, where a boy was pronounced dead.
The incident occurred just after 7:20 a.m. on the 6500 block of Jackson Drive, near Lake Badin Avenue and Blue Lake Drive.
In response, the city of San Diego will install a four-way stop sign at the intersection in question, which residents say have long been seen as a safety hazard. A sign that appeared days after the crash said they would be completed within two weeks.
District counselors will be available this week to assist students, staff, and parents, said Melanie Kray, the school’s principal, in a letter to families.
“PLease be assured that we are doing everything possible to maintain our daily routine while supporting each other as we deal with this sad event,” Kray wrote.
On social media, some residents nearby said the speed limit on Jackson Drive — 40 miles per hour — is too high considering visibility issues the street’s hill crests create. While the incident is still under investigation, at this time, police do not think drugs, alcohol, or speed contributed.
“We ask that you please respect the privacy of our families during this difficult time,” Kay concluded in her letter. “We are a close and caring community, and we will continue to support one another through this time of grief and healing.”
